Ikone - Der Schutz der Gottesmutter (Pokrow) - Eitempera auf Levkas auf Holz

Central Russian fine late 18th century icon depicting the miracle of the Pokrov of the Mother of God and the miracle of Romanos the Melodicus. Both Byzantine miracles are remembered on 1 October, hence the tradition has grouped them together in one iconography.
In the upper half the Holy Virgin shows the relic of her veil to the inhabitants of Byzantium in front of the cathedral where this relics are kept. Below the diacon Romanos is red robes singing as a nightingale in the Hagia Sophia cathedral in the presence of the Emperor and Empress. Initially he had a very bad voice but in the lower right corner we see the Holy Virgin feeding him with a scroll with the hymns he has to sing. And miraculously he signs as a nightingale. A very fine icon , all painted with pigments from natural sources and thus resembling a very fine Persian carpet. 30,25 x 26 cm. Very good condition
