Central Russian 17th century icon depicting the Mother of God of Vladimir. The nickname of this type of Eleousa ( Tender embracement) icon is " The Mother of the Russian soil". The Vladimirskaja goes back on a Byzantine Eleousa icon of the 9th century AD. The oldest Russian image of this Eleousa icon called Vladirmirskaja came with a Byzantine princess to Kiev, was brought by her grandson to the city of Vladimir and was brought from there to Moscow to the Uspensky Sobor. In front of this icon all Russian Tzars were crowned from 1460 -1917. This is a fine 17th century example of the Vladimirskaja. The background is cleaned till the levkas layer. Fine chrysografy in the mantle of the Child. 27 x 23 cm.
