In Japan, “magic lantern” were used before World War II, but have rarely been used since then. These are glass plates that can be placed in a “magic lantern machine". The state of preservation is very excellent. Not a single piece is broken, and the glass is clean and beautiful. The lines of the hand-drawn illustrations are clearly expressed. The red areas are blotchy due to age. The contents of the illustrations are very interesting. They depict the people of Japan in the Taisho and early Showa periods. It may be before the war started. We can imagine the city still “bright”. An old Japanese flag made in the same period is attached. These are wonderful works of art. Moreover, I have never seen glass plates in such good condition.
