A single large form folio from a Persian Safaivid Koran C1540. The folio has 14 lines of evenly spaced naskh scripture in an accomplished hand which is particularly clear. The 12 verses are marked out with simple gold aya, each with a central red dot and six equally spaced radials spreading out to the circumference. There are devotional markings in red within the scripture. The scripture is framed with 5 lines in red, gold and a final blue frame line. Outside of the frame in the margin are a pair of verse roundels, with the top roundel probably indicating rubʿ, quarter, of the ǧuzʾ or half of the ḥizb and the lower, simpler decorative roundel a '10th' verse. There is some staining to the page but this is common for its age. This is a fine example of a Persian Koran manuscript folio that dates back to the English Tudors. The Safavid dynasty, (1501–1736), was the ruling dynasty of Iran whose establishment of Twelver Shiʿism as the state religion of Iran was a major factor in the emergence of a unified national consciousness among the various ethnic and linguistic elements of the country.
