Mary and St. John from a calvary group. Woodcarving in baroque style. Austria or South Germany 18th century. Both statues in counterpost attitude with parts of the original polychromy and partly gilt wood. (with restorations in the paint) The both statues are parts of a calvary group now without the crucified Jezus. Mary and St.john are depicted according to the Gospel of St.John chapter 18 verse26 & 27. In this verses Jezus says: : ' Woman her is your son' and to the disciple "here is your mother'. Strong expressions in the statues with elaborated draped mantles and tunics executed by a skilled woodcarver from the Alpenlands. Deeply carved and full round. On the back of Mary a piece of inserted wood; probably to house a relic ?? Good examples of baroque woodcarving in the 18th century.
