Beautiful workmanship by notable master Isoi Joshin, named an Important Intangible Cultural Property Holder (Living National Treasure) for kinma in 1956. He was born in Miyawaki, Kagawa-gun (present day Kameokacho, Takamatsu City) in 1883. Isoi Joshin first studied lacquer arts at the Kagawa Prefectural Crafts School. After graduating in 1903 he moved to Osaka for a time to continue his studies. In 1904 he won a prize for a piece he exhibited at the St. Louis World Exposition. In 1909 he returned to Takamatsu where he founded his own studio. Isoi studied the works of Tamakaji Zokoku, called the father of Kagawa lacquerware arts, and developed his own style of lacquer technique to create three dimensionality and depth. He also formed societies for the study of arts and crafts, and greatly elevated the level of Kagawa lacquerware arts, while giving lectures to future generations at Kagawa Prefectural Takamatsu Kogei High School, Okayama University, and the Kagawa Urushi Lacquerware Institute. Hi died in 1964, when he was 81 years old.
