This Edo period or Later wooden bust depicts Amitābha Buddha (Amida Nyorai), a central figure in Mahayana Buddhism, particularly revered in the Jōdo and Jōdo Shinshū traditions. Amitābha symbolizes "Infinite Light" (Amitābha) and "Infinite Life" (Amitāyus), embodying boundless compassion and wisdom. As the lord of the Western Pure Land (Sukhavati), Amitābha is venerated as a savior guiding beings to enlightenment.
The bust showcases a serene expression, with carefully carved features including the characteristic ushnisha (cranial protuberance) and urna (forehead mark). The remaining portion of the statue suggests it was once part of a larger piece.
Visible signs of age include surface wear, discoloration, and dirt accumulation. A prominent crack runs through the piece, with additional smaller surface cracks present. The jewel on the forehead is missing, further testifying to its long history. Please refer to the provided photos for a detailed assessment of its condition. This artifact is a poignant example of Edo period Buddhist artistry and a valuable addition to any collection of religious antiques.
Dimensions: approx. H 15 cm W 8.8 cm D 5.3 cm
