This finely crafted copper statue from the 20th century depicts Daikokuten, one of Japan's beloved Seven Lucky Gods. Signed by the artist Eikō (永光) on the back, this piece embodies traditional craftsmanship and cultural significance.
Originally an epithet of the Hindu god Shiva, Daikokuten was assimilated into Japanese Buddhism and folk beliefs, evolving into the deity known today. He is revered as the god of wealth, prosperity, agriculture, and good fortune, believed to bring blessings such as abundant harvests, success in life, and matchmaking.
In this statue, Daikokuten stands on rice bales, symbolizing wealth, plenty, and a bountiful harvest. He holds the mallet of fortune (Uchide no Kozuchi) aloft in his right hand, representing the ability to grant wishes and bring wealth; shaking the mallet is said to magically produce treasures. Over his left shoulder, he carries a sack containing valuable goods and secrets, signifying generosity and the sharing of blessings. The statue captures these symbols with intricate detail, reflecting Daikokuten's joyful and benevolent character. The natural patina that has developed over time adds depth and authenticity to the piece.
