This copper alloy shishi (guardian lion) ornament sculpture from the 20th century is a striking representation of the mythical creatures often seen in Chinese and Japanese culture. Shishi are traditionally placed at the entrances of temples, homes, and other buildings to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Their fierce and powerful appearance symbolizes protection and strength, making them enduring symbols of safety and prosperity.
This particular piece features an intricately crafted openwork peony ball, adding an elegant and symbolic element to the ornament. Peonies are often associated with wealth and honor, enhancing the cultural significance of this piece. The shishi also appears to have originally been part of a larger composition. There is a protrusion on its rear left leg, suggesting it was once attached to another element. Additionally, two holes are present on the bottom of the figure, further indicating its integration into a combined structure.
The ornament shows slight signs of patina and dust, which are consistent with its age. Please carefully review the photos for further details on the condition.
Dimensions: approx. H 34 cm W 33 cm D 19 cm
