An exquisite lacquer table-like stand designed to hold a hibachi 火鉢 (fire bowl/brazier), featuring a lavish floral motif of scrolling foliage (karakusa) surrounding the iconic family crest (mon) depicting hollyhock leaves 三つ葉葵 (mitsuba aoi).
The depicted crest is famously associated with the Tokugawa family 徳川氏, one of Japan's most powerful daimyō clans. The Tokugawa crest, known as the "triple hollyhock," became a symbol of both the clan and the last shogunate.
The surface is rendered in golden hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) on a glossy black lacquered ground rôiro’urushi 蝋色漆.
The stand features a rectangular top with gracefully lobed corners adorned with parcel gilt decorative metal hardware, meticulously chiseled with an en-suite motif. At its center rests a copper brazier with an elegant patina, complementing the overall design. The structure is supported by four gracefully curved console-shaped legs.
This type of refined and elaborate hibachi is often referred to as a goten’hibachi 御殿火鉢, meaning "palace" or "court" brazier, or daimyô’hibachi 大名火鉢, signifying its association with feudal lords—the latter more fitting for this period.
