It is made from the same material as the cedar wood found throughout Japan, but while normal cedars are said to live for around 500 years, several giant Yakusugi trees have been discovered that are over 2000 years old.
They also grow very slowly, only reaching a diameter of 40cm in 500 years. In the cedar avenues of Nikko, some have grown to over 150cm in about 360 years.
You can imagine how rare and valuable a Yakusugi cedar with a large diameter is.
Yakusugi cedars grow slowly, have a dense material with a lot of resin, and are resistant to rot, so they are thought to live a long life.
