Mihaly Melcher (1953) - On the move

Graduated from the Hungarian University of Arts and Design (currently: Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design), Budapest, Hungary, 1986. He is a member of the Hungarian Glass Art Society. He has received a number of awards in Hungary, including: SZOT Prize, 1987; Noémi Ferenczy Award, 2012. He has participated in numerous domestic and international exhibitions, both individual and group, including: World Glass Now, the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, Sapporo, Japan, 1989; SOFA Chicago, IL, USA, 1997; Habatat Galleries, Detroit, MI, USA, 2011; the Plateaux Gallery, London, UK, 2012. His works are included in many international public collections, such as: Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, Ebeltoft, Denmark; Ernsting Stiftung, Glasmuseum Alter Hof Herding, Coesfeld, Germany; the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest; the Contemporary Glass Art Museum in Alcorcón (MAVA), Spain; the Pesterzsébet Museum, Budapest, Hungary; the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, Sapporo. Mihály Melcher embraces the technological achievements of Egyptian glass art. His solid, geometrical and organic glass sculptures are meant to symbolize unity. He aims, through his works, to enable the human spirit to transcend the material reality and reach the invisible world of imagination. He runs a glass art studio in Csobánka – a village in the Pilis Mountains, Hungary, 30 km from Budapest.
