【Product details】

This rare and exquisite Edo period picnic set features intricate family crest maki-e designs and a shimmering nashiji lacquer finish, all housed in a matching carrying case with a handle. The set includes a wooden water flask, one tray, a four-tiered stacking box with lid, a container without a box, and a matching carrying case.

The pieces are adorned with numerous family crests lavishly depicted in mother-of-pearl (raden) inlay over a nashiji background. Crests include the Honda Aoi, Butterfly, Tomoe, Diamond Flower, Bellflower, Three-part Maple, Ken Katabami, Clasped Arrowhead, Clasped Holly, Radish, and Mandarin Orange. Each crest carries symbolic meanings, such as nobility, transformation, protection, strength, and longevity.

Uniquely, the tray features a maki-e design of a rabbit meeting an ogre under a crescent moon. In Japanese folklore, rabbits are linked with the moon, symbolizing cleverness and ambition, while the ogre often represents challenges. This scene suggests a tale of courage and overcoming adversity.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth.

The set shows signs of age, including scuffs, scratches, stains, small chips in the lacquer, losses in the raden inlay, discoloration, and cracks in the lacquer and corners of the stacking box. The sake bottle is missing, and there is no storage box. Please refer to the photos for a detailed assessment of the condition.
