Bådformet ikebana blomstervase - Lakeret træ - Japan - Edo-perioden (1600-1868)
An antique Wajima lacquer 輪島塗り vessel for ikebana flower arrangements, elegantly shaped like a boat. The vessel is decorated with maple leaves 楓 (kaede) and cherry blossoms 桜 (sakura), appearing to be scattered on the wind above waves. In the center of the boat, a san’no’tsudzumi 三ノ鼓 (an hourglass-shaped small hand drum), a sensu 扇子 (folding fan), and an eboshi 烏帽子 (headgear worn by nobles) are depicted, evoking the imagery of Gagaku 雅楽 (Japanese Imperial Court Music and Dance), where such drums are used, and this type of headwear is worn.
The design is rendered in hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) in various shades of gold, highlighted by kirigane 切金 (cut and inlaid pieces of gold leaf) and nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer), set against a vermillion red lacquered substrate.
The stern with inscription: "Chamei'maru" 茶名丸 (Ship named Chamei).
Complete with a pair of light brown lacquered bamboo segment vases lined with copper, these cylindrical containers are perfect for flower arrangements. It also includes a wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box) with inscriptions.
Period: Japan – Edo period (1603-1868).
