Winemaking: It initially remains for 12 months in large old wooden vats from the winery's founding period, where it completes malolactic fermentation and stabilises before being racked. It is then aged for between 36 and 42 months in used 225-litre American oak barrels that are on average 10 years old.
Tasting notes: Bright reddish ruby colour of medium depth, clear, luminous, with hints of grenadine and copper. Wide, orangey rim, with a marked difference with the meniscus.
A red wine with a very traditional character, rested and well-defined, of medium intensity, smooth, gaining aromatic presence as it is oxygenated. Initially, fine wood, cedar, birch, cigars, old leather and a growing note of red fruits, strawberries, liquorice and spices. Very full-bodied, solid, never falling apart during the 5 hours of tasting. Increasingly earthy and autumnal, with aromas of shady undergrowth, leaves and dust.
In the mouth it is fresh, light, dry and very austere. A red wine without excesses, very pleasant to drink, with very fine tannins and present acidity. It has a style that can only be called "Barbera", well-known and appreciated. Long, jammy finish, with a spicy sensation in retronasal. Very good Berberana from the late 70s; one of the best of the house that I have tasted to date. It is at least on a par with the 1973 Gran Reserva, which had already undergone a reduction from 5 to 3 years of oak ageing, and well above that endearing "false crianza" that was the Carta de Oro. One of the last vintages produced before the death of Melquíades Entrena, which would lead the company to the Rumasa's sinkhole. We still have wines like this one that testify to the good work of this legendary Riojan winery.
