A Shakyamuni Buddha
Nepal, 20th century
Buddha Shakyamuni taking the earth as a witness to his Awakening. The Buddha is in a sitting position, with his right hand resting on his right leg and his fingers pointing towards the ground. It is the “Mudra Bhumisparsha” which means “to touch the ground” or “to take the land to witness”. The left hand rests on the knee with the palm facing up. This statue represents an important event in the Buddha's life when he attains enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. After Buddha had overcome the many trials of the demon Mara and attained Enlightenment, he challenged Victory for lack of a witness. The Buddha then extended his right hand towards the earth. The latter began to tremble, witnessing the Ultimate Realization of the Buddha, and the demon king disappeared.
