These are old Kabuki pamphlets. Rare and well preserved.
They are from before World War II.
The pamphlets contain Kabuki performances. What is interesting is that they contain drawings as well as text.
These drawings are artistic and wonderful. They are fun to look at.
And there is something to notice.
Kabuki performances are entertainment and do not, by nature, reflect the political and economic climate of Japan. However, as the war draws to a close, we can clearly catch glimpses of the public sentiment being reflected.
In other words, the pamphlet is changing.
They used to be thick pamphlets with playful inserts such as “Sugoroku” and corporate advertisements, but as the war drew to a close, they became thin pamphlets with no corporate advertisements. Instead, several war-propaganda pictures and words are printed in several places.
The content of the Kabuki performance itself does not seem to have changed.
Carefully packaged and shipped from Japan to overseas.
