Bajô jingasa 馬上陣笠 (hesteryg samurai hat) - Lakeret træ, Bomuld - Japan - Meiji-perioden (1868-1912)

Great black lacquer bajô jingasa 馬上陣笠 (horseback samurai hat) with a slightly upward-bent visor. In front a crest 紋 (mon) in golden maki-e depicting four tilted open squares in a circle目結 (meyui). The backside with a cord ring adorned with a red age’maki (decorative tassel). Meyui literally translates as ‘eye tie’, in reference to a expensive traditional Japanese tie dyeing process to produce a dappled effect. The inside coated with red lacquer adorned, and fitted with a head cushion. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912). Approx. size: Height 10.5 cm, Width 31.7 cm, Depth 35.6 cm. The helmet is in a good condition with some traces of wear conform age. A dent next to the ring. Old restoration inside and front. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. Jingasa ("war hat"): a type of hat commonly worn by samurai and ashigaru (foot soldiers). When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
