Keith Haring (1958-1990, American)
Bridging the gap between the art world and the street, Keith Haring made a name for himself in the early 1980s with his graffiti painted on New York subways and sidewalks. Combining the charm of cartoons with the raw energy of outsider artists like Jean Dubuffet, Haring developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic centered on bold, fluid outlines against a backdrop of dense, rhythmic images such as newborns, barking dogs, flying saucers, hearts and Mickey Mouse. In his subway drawings and murals, Haring explored themes of exploitation, subjugation, drug addiction, and the growing fear of nuclear holocaust, which became increasingly apocalyptic after his AIDS diagnosis. Along with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scarf and Jenny Holzer, Haring is considered a leading figure in New York's East Village art scene of the 1970s and 1980s.
