XIX century Italian school - After Antonio da Correggio (1489-1534), After - The mystical marriage of Saint Catherine after Correggio

Antonio da Correggio 1489-1534) - After Period : Mid to late 19th century Medium : Oil on canvas Provenance: From a private UK collection Overall size with the frame is 42 cm x 36 cm x 4 cm and the painting measuring 29 cm x 24 cm The painting offered is a 19th Continental School depiction of the mystic betrothal of the Infant Jesus to Catherine after the 16th century original by Correggio which is held at Museo di Capodimonte in Naples . According to medieval writings the story relays how from words given to her in The Golden Legend by Jacopo de Voragine in the 13th century. In the painting the Christ Child is depicted as sitting in the Virgin’s lap in a hilly landscape setting and giving St Catherine a ring, guided by his mother. She is kneeling, holding her martyr’s palm, and the spiked wheel on which she was tortured, and the sword with which she was finally beheaded by the pagan Emperor Maxentius around AD310, lie between them. This is a very fine mid to late 19th century copy which has been framed in a new high quality wooden ebonised effect and gilt lined frame. See notes below regarding frames. Condition report. The painting is unlined without any repairs other than a professional cleaning and minor retouching to a few tiny areas lower right and well - blended. There is some virtually invisible very fine craquelure. The canvas is in good tension. On very close inspection feint stretcher bar impression on the left hand side but not noticeable when hung and no associated paint abrasion whatsoever. In very good condition for its antiquity. Please note. The frame that is included in the pictures above has been added to the artwork by a third party/the seller, as such it’s not an integral part of the object. Also refer to the shipping costs and note the auctioneers disclaimer regarding potential customs charges. We cannot calculate these as they are levied in the country of destination and the amount payable is determined by customs there and not by ourselves or the auctioneers.
