A very RARE and interesting book published in 1897, FIRST edition.... "Hindu Manners, Customs and Ceremonies, Translated from the Author's later French Ms. And edited with Notes, Corrections, and Biography." Scarce first revised edition. This is the main work by the French Catholic missionary Abbe' Jean Antoine Dubois (1765-1848) who lived for some thirty years in India, attempting to convert people to Catholicism. He dressed and lived in the Hindu manners and wrote the best book on the subject for much of the 19th century. The East India company had bought the Abbà 's manuscript in 1816, and published it. This edition however, is based on the author's later revisions and additions. Book in very good condition, inside very good clean condition, only light stains, externally light wear around edges and corners, label on spine chipped. SCARCE.
