Pair of Vases in Servres style, with mythological scene : “The forges of Vulcan”
Decoration with gilded details. Vases Heigth 56 cm.
About the artist François Boucher :
The decoration reproduces on one side a rural landscape and on the other side the mythological scene entitled “The forges of Vulcan” or “Vulcan presenting weapons to Venus for Aeneas”, that it was originally a rococo style painting, oil on canvas, made in 1757 by François Boucher (29 September 1703 – 30 May 1770).
It was exhibited at the Salon of 1757, Paris, Grand Salon du Louvre (no. 11 of the booklet). This painting was intended to be executed as a tapestry by the Gobelins factory (Tapestry of the god's Loves). It was paid 3,600 pounds between 1757 and 1760. The artwork, property of the Louis XV Collection, was transferred to the Louvre between 1816 and 1824. Today is located in the Louvre Museum, Department of Painting, main number INV 2707 bis. (Link Museum : https://collections.louvre.fr/en/ark:/53355/cl010060479)
There is an exemplary of the tapestry, made after 1758 at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. (Link Museum : https://art.thewalters.org/detail/17062/vulcan-presenting-to-venus-arms-for-aeneas/) (See also the pictures).
François Boucher was considered the most famous painter and decorator of the 18th century who held the prestigious title of first painter to the King.
The Vincennes Manufactory first and the Sèvres later, showed particular attention to the compositions of the French painter François Boucher, constituting a very popular source of inspiration for the artists who worked in the central decades of the 18th century.
Prints made from Boucher's paintings were widely circulated and provided artists with compositions that could be faithfully reproduced on a smaller scale or adapted into three-dimensional porcelain sculptures. Boucher's works served as a source not only for the scenes painted on vases and snuffboxes, but also for the porcelain figures that were listed as "Enfants Boucher" (Boucher Children) in the factory's sales records.
Many of these examples are preserved in various museums, as also revealed by some biscuit statuettes used to decorate dessert tables, examples of which can be found in the Porcelain Museum of Palazzo Pitti (inv. A.c.e. 1911, nos. 1404, 1406 , 1412-1415, 1651-1652); or the flower vase (described in the Sèvres inventories as Vase Hollandais) made in 1757, coming from the Collection of the Treasure of the Grand Dukes and also preserved in the Porcelain Museum of Palazzo Pitti in Florence (https://www.uffizi.it/opere /vase-flowers-manifattura-sevres); see also the Vase à flacon of 1772 (https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/202177) and the Vase cannelés à bandeau of around 1770 https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection /search/202220), both preserved at The MET (The Metropolitan Museum of Art).
