C. 332-30 BC - Ptolemaic Period
Ushabtis from the Ptolemaic period in ancient Egypt, like those associated with Queen Cleopatra VII, were intricately crafted funerary figurines. Made from materials such as faience, these statuettes were placed in tombs to serve the deceased in the afterlife. Ptolemaic ushabtis often bore inscriptions with spells and were designed to resemble the deceased, ensuring their assistance in laborious tasks in the realm beyond. The ushabtis of this era showcase a blend of traditional Egyptian funerary practices and the influence of the Hellenistic period on art and iconography. As guardians of the deceased, Ptolemaic ushabtis exemplify the enduring religious beliefs and artistic innovation of the time.
A ushabti wearing a tripartite wig and mounted on wooden block.
Glaze remaining otherwise intact.
