Before the spread of cotton in Japan, fabrics were made from hemp and ramie fibers. Even after the spread of cotton, many rural and common people's clothes were made of hemp, but since the mid-20th century, hemp clothing has been rapidly disappearing. In Japan, which has four distinct seasons, hemp fibers were spun thin or thick and woven coarsely or densely using all kinds of techniques from hot to cold seasons. But these techniques are now lost. These garments are Hakama and Momohiki made of hemp. The fabric itself is roughly woven, and the unique color and texture of the hemp fabric still remains, making it less wearable. They were probably most common in rural areas. There is a scuff on the hem of the hakama. Other than that, it is in very good condition. Please see pictures detail.
