Indusdalen Terrakotta Votiv statuette (Ingen mindstepris)
A fine Indus Valley terracotta figurine of a seated fertility goddess, featuring classic characteristic facial features including rounded, sunken eyes, and a protruding hooked nose. She wears delicately carved head and neck pieces, and is presented seated with her forearms held horizontally and her legs bent at the knees. Both hands and left feet are present and exhibit fine finger and toe detailing, however the right feet and parts of the headpiece are now missing. Earthly encrustations remain on the surface. Repair to the head, right arm, and both legs.
The Indus Valley Civilisation extended from what today is north east Afghanistan to Pakistan and north west India. It was one of three early and widespread cradles of civilisation along with Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. At its peak, the Indus Valley Civilisation, which included such sites as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, may have had a population of over five million, who developed new techniques in pottery, seal carving, and metallurgy.
