Luristan Bronze Spydspids med rottehaletang (Ingen mindstepris)
A fine Luristan spearhead featuring a long leaf-shaped blade and a prominent raised central midrib. The blade curves into a long, narrow, 'rat-tail' tang which would have been inserted into a wooden shaft. There are some chips to the edge of the blade consistent with its age and an attractive green patina to the surface, as well as some earthly encrustations.
Luristan bronze comes from the province of Lorestan, renowned in antiquity for its sophisticated metal working techniques. In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites, settled in the area. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of the Luristan bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items often included weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Everyday objects are also found including pins and bracelets. Early models of spearheads were designed in a flat dagger-like blades with a thin tang which would be used to attach the metal head to a wooden shaft and be tied to the body. Later designs, such as this one, would evolve to provide side support which would allow a more secure attachment to the weapon. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Luristan bronze objects often serve ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts.
