A beautiful copy of this First Edition, bound by H Beenkens & Fils, in full brown calf, gilded and cold flowered decoration made of a rectangular central motif and threaded frames with corner fleurons, boxed spine and flat golden flowered ribs. A touch of rubbing and bumping to the boards.

The book is held in the lined slipcase, with leather edging and marbled cover. Label to the top cover shows the edition. Title in red and black with a vignette engraving, running title, initials and pagination printed in red.

Original wood engravings by André Dignimont. The original green paper covers are bound in, and in beautiful condition. List of subscribers bound in to the rear.

A total edition of 200 copies - of which 150 are numbered in Arabic numbers, and 50 in Roman numerals, with the name of the recipient. This copy (V) belonged to Adrien de Mélotte de Lavaux (1874-1942), vice-consul in China (1899-1902) then director of the Sino-Belgian bank in Shanghai (1902-1903). He then returned to Liège where he devoted himself to philanthropy and to writing.

Excité de découvrir 'Anti-Contrat Social' de J.-J. Rousseau et P.L. de Bauclair, édition 1981. Il s’agit là d’un ouvrage essentiel et important à explorer avec rigueur et passion.
