Born in Kobe City. His father is printmaker Kawanishi Hide. He started making woodblock prints at the age of eight, learning from his father, and later became an active member of the Japan Print Association and the Kokugakai. Since 1966, he has taught as a part-time lecturer at Nara University of Education. In 1985, he received the Kobe City Culture Award. While inheriting his father's woodblock techniques, he skillfully incorporated ink printing and other techniques to create his own unique style, creating a tranquil world in contrast to his father's.
