Skulptur, Saint Joseph with Child Jesus, 18th Century - 50 cm - Træ
Figure of Saint Joseph with Child Jesus. Made in South Germany, maybe Tyrol. In the 18th century.
Here Saint Joseph is represented holding his son, Jesus Christ, in his right arm and a tunic wrapped around his left. In this clasical iconography, we can see the typical traits of South German Baroque of the XVIII Century, such as the red cheeks, bright saturated colors, blond-haired child Jesus, and the use of gilting for certain parts of the clothes, among others.
There is a hanger attached to the back that would have been used to keep the statue from falling out of the niche in a church or chapel that would have probably been dedicated to the Saint. Because of this, we can assume this statue has been at the center of the prayers of townspeople throughout the centuries and has enjoyed its fair share of worship.
It is in great condition, no missing parts and most of the original polychrome still in its place. Traces of dead xilophages at the botton, inactive for a long time.
