Decorated horse; China, Wei Dynasty, 386-534 AD. c.
Polychrome terracotta.
Attached certificate of thermoluminescence.
Measurements:30 x 27 cm
Figure made in a round shape standing on its four legs located on a small base. The modeling of the horse presents an anatomy of a realistic and detailed character that can be seen in the face and the riding clothes with which it is dressed. Its stylized bearing stands out, and its posture that gives great expressiveness to the piece due to the opening of the front legs that denote a movement and therefore the performance of an action. These types of pieces used to be part of the funerary trousseau of the Wei dynasty, since the horse was a symbol of rank and belonging to the upper echelon in the social hierarchy. The piece still preserves traces of the original polychromy applied as a slip on the clay piece and not with a glaze. Visible especially, the polychromy, in the riding clothes and in some horse trappings.
The Wei dynasty ruled northern China in the Northern and Southern Dynasties period (420-589), being the first of the northern dynasties. This period followed the fall of the Jin dynasty, and was a time when southern and northern China had different governments. Although the north had already been in the hands of the Wei dynasty since 386, the beginning date of this historical period is conventionally placed in the year 420, when the refugee Jin dynasty came to an end, being replaced by the first of the southern dynasties, the Liu-Song.
The pottery of the Southern and Northern Dynasties period is a continuation of that of the Three Kingdoms and Six Dynasties period, a time when there was an important development of pottery art from the tradition of the Han period. They continue to make mainly funerary figurines decorated with slips, but the techniques are perfected in a remarkable way, as are the pastes, the slips, etc.

A embalagem era desadequada porque não garantiu a preservação da peça. Verficou-se a quebra de uma parte da peça.
