The first Gold Medal to be won by the Jack Daniel Distillery was a special one. Mr. Jack Daniel himself traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, for the 1904 Worlds Fair, and against all odds, he came back to Lynchburg with the 1904 Gold Medal for the worlds best whiskey.To commemorate the 100th anniversary of this special honour, the Jack Daniel Distillery is releasing a limited quantity of the reproduction of the original 1904 Gold Medal decanter that Jack Daniel had helped to design. He commissioned several special bottles to commemorate notable events or accomplishments during his lifetime, but the 1904 Gold Medal decanter was particularly unique with its fluted body and neck.The 100th anniversary bottle, a 1.50 ML decanter filled with 90-proof Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey, has the same fluted design and similar lettering of the one Mr. Jack had commissioned in 1904. The Story of the Gold Medal Bottle"In June, 1904, Mr.Jack Daniel loaded some of his best whiskey and traveled to St. Louis to compete at the World's Fair! There he would mingle with the world's most famous distillers!On the day of the judging, 24 tables were lined up in rows. The tables where filled with all the whiskeys in the competition. The judges moved slowly from whiskey to whiskey, tasting each, but being careful not to swallow the whiskey inside. They would then rinse their mouths with very cold water before moving to the next competitor.As the afternoon drew on, all but 15 distilleries were eliminated. Each whiskey was sampled again, until finally the judges were ready to announce their decision. One of the English judges, Henry Hoctor, stepped forward and proclaimed in dramatic tones "Gentlemen the Gold Medal for the world's finest whiskey goes to Jack Daniel Distillery, Lynchburg, not Virginia, but Lynchburg in Tennessee."When the excitement of the fair had subsided, Jack returned to Lynchburg to celebrate his new won fame. In honor of the event, he designed a uniquely shaped bottle, filled it with his award winning whiskey and gave it to the many people who were responsible for making his whiskey.In the early 1970's we released a replica of Mr. Jack's special Gold Medal bottle in the original half-gallon size, which has become quite a collectors item.
