Shoki is a Taoist deity found mainly in Chinese folklore. In Japan, he is believed to be effective in warding off smallpox and academic success, and paintings and dolls of him are dedicated to him on the Boys' Festival. Images of Shoki are also said to have the power to ward off evil, so they are displayed as flags, folding screens, and hanging scrolls, and statues of Shoki are placed on roofs.
Images of Shoki always depict him with a long beard, wearing the costume of a Chinese official, holding a sword, and glaring at something with his large eyes.
