This made them an ideal propaganda tool for Roman Emperors to present themselves and the message they wanted to communicate. They are an important symbol of power and are full of symbolism. Coin: Æ silvered antoninianus, Emperor Probus, struck Cyzicus 277 AD. The authentic Roman coin is set in a new silver pendant with a laurel wreath border. To the Romans, a laurel wreath was a symbol of victory in war. Laurel wreaths were worn by triumphatores: victorious generals celebrating a Roman military triumph. On Roman coins or statues, the Emperor is often depicted wearing a laurel wreath as a symbol of power. Obverse: IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG, Radiate, helmeted and cuirassed bust left, holding spear and shield Reverse: ADVENTVS PROBI AVG, Emperor riding left, holding sceptre and raising right hand, captive before horse. Officina letter T in lower centre. Mintmark: XXIMC Diameter pendant: ± 34 mm Reference: RIC 35; Cohen 5; Sear 14975 Condition coin: VF / EF. He encouraged the planting of vineyards in Gaul, Spain, and Britain and was evidently killed by troops who resented his discipline and being set to agricultural work. ADVENTVS PROBI AVG: Arrival of Emperor Probus. The arrival of the emperor to Rome was a major event worthy of celebration and commemoration. The type usually shows the emperor on horseback, raising his right hand in greeting, sometimes accompanied by soldier and sometimes with a small captive under the horse's raised right leg.
