MURS- MURS, AU DELÀ DU MUR... Né à Dakar, Mouhamadou DIOP est un jeune artiste peintre, graphiste et vidéaste, diplômé de l'Ecole Nationale des Arts du Sénégal. Il a aussi poursuivi des études en web design en France où il vit depuis 2018. Son travail a fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions à travers le monde (Dakar, Abuja, Paris, Bruxelles, Düsseldorf, Rennes, etc...). Il est aussi connu pour ses vidéos, présentées à la Biennale de Dakar en 2018 (pavillon Sénégal), entre autres... Grand explorateur des parois tachées ou craquelées qu’il travaillait sans relâche, dans son ancienne vie de peintre en bâtiment, Mouhamadou DIOP est un adepte des murs bavards. C’est comme s’il était né « dans» le graffiti, happé par l’ère de la technologie et de la sur communication. Il est « pris au jeu »... Il en devient un observateur attentif de son époque, sensible aux diverses problématiques qui affectent la vie de ses contemporains. Ses œuvres évoquent ses propres cheminements d’artiste dans l’espace public. Il y met en scène une identité extraordinaire, qui n’est possible que par un engagement corporel et mental fort. Transgression, prise de risques, aventure conditionnent son processus créatif. C’est une quête de reconnaissance sociale, régie aussi par un «code d’honneur ». Des cheminements qui à terme donnent naissance à des oeuvres interpellantes, parfois dérangeantes mais qui laissent rarement indifférent. En tant qu'artiste visuel, il voit les murs comme un médium pour l'humanité, un poumon silencieux qui inspire l’urbanité et expire l’empreinte du passé. Murs-miroirs, images en abîmes, palimpsestes graffitis : tous ces signes dialoguent avec d’autres formes d’expression. Mouhamadou DIOP en explore territoires et limites, il emprunte leur vocabulaire et fait référence à l’espace, au déplacement, voire au temps nécessaire à l’accomplissement du processus de transformation à l’œuvre. Ils prennent ainsi le passant à témoin et exposent leur vision du monde. Les mots et les images de ses murs parlent de l’homme des origines, annoncent le nouveau citoyen africain et du monde et révèlent les dynamiques à l’œuvre en Afrique et le reste de la planète. Reconnu ou méconnu, Mouhamadou DIOP fait partie de ces artistes qui jouent un rôle important dans la construction et l’exposition de ce savoir intime des villes qu’ils habitent et qu’ils rêvent tout à la fois. Son ancrage dans la cité et son appartenance au pays, au continent et au monde s’expriment sur les murs et dans ses œuvres devenant des archives éphémères certes, mais indélébiles dans les esprits. À grands traits de pinceaux et à grands jets de bombes aérosols, ils explorent de nouveaux territoires pour l’art. Ils lancent un débat au cœur des espaces habités : d’où venons nous ? Dans quel monde, dans quel pays, dans quelle ville voulons-nous vivre ? Ils font le pari de croire en des jours meilleurs pour l’Afrique et en un destin commun aux Africains. Il affirme résolument cette volonté de se positionner comme un conteur de son temps et un gardien de la mémoire collective. Lieux du possible, d’appel, d’attente et de l’inattendu, ses murs murmurent, nous parlent à tous, questionnant notre perception du monde mais aussi, faisant place à un passé recomposé qui fait désormais entendre l’autre histoire. Ses graffitis et peintures murales s’en font l’écho sensible et nous invitent à une relecture, à la fois ouverte et renouvelée du monde qui nous entoure. WALL WHISPERS, BEYOND THE WALL... A great explorer of stained or cracked walls that he worked tirelessly, in his former life as a house painter, is a follower of chatty walls. It’s as if he was born "into" graffiti, caught up in the age of technology and over communication. He is “caught up in the game”... He becomes an attentive observer of his time, sensitive to the various issues that affect the lives of his contemporaries. His works evoke his own artistic journeys in public space. He stages an extraordinary identity, which is only possible through a strong bodily and mentally commitment. Transgression, risk-taking, adventure condition his creative process. It is a quest for social recognition, also governed by a "code of honor". Pathways which in the long term give birth to challenging works, sometimes disturbing but which rarely leave indifferent. As a visual artist, he sees walls as a medium for humanity, a silent lung that inspires urbanity and exhales the imprint of the past. Mirror walls, images in abysses, graffiti palimpsests: all these signs interact with other forms of expression. Mouhamadou DIOP explores their territories and limits, he borrows their vocabulary and refers to space, displacement, even the time necessary to accomplish the transformation process at work. They thus take the passer-by as a witness and expose their vision of the world. The words and images on its walls speak of the original man, announce the new African and world citizen and reveal the dynamics at work in Africa and in the rest of the planet. Recognized or unknown, Mouhamadou DIOP is one of those artists who play an important role in the construction and exhibition of this intimate knowledge of the cities they inhabit and which they dream at the same time. His anchoring in the city and his belonging to the country, to the continent and to the world are expressed on the walls and in his works, becoming ephemeral archives of course, but indelible in people's minds. With broad strokes of brushes and large jets of aerosol cans, they explore new territories for art. They launch a debate in the heart of inhabited spaces: where do we come from? In which world, in which country, in which city do we want to live? They are betting to believe in better days for Africa and in a common destiny for Africans. Mouhamadou DIOP resolutely affirms this desire to position himself as a storyteller of his time and a guardian of collective memory. Places of the possible, of calling, of expectation and of the unexpected, his walls whisper, speak to all of us, questioning our perception of the world but also, giving way to a recomposed past which now makes another story heard. His graffiti and murals echo this sensibly and invite us to re-read, both open and renewed, the world around us.
