unknown - Koran - 1290

A well preserved page from the remnants of a thirteenth century illuminated Koran. Some minor repairs to the lower right corner and some damp staining (but minimal for its age), but otherwise in exceptional condition. It consists of eleven lines of scripture, with gold aya marking the 8 verses and decorative illuminated marginals marking verse 5 and 10 respectively. Although it looks like there are considerable more lines of script, the folio is unusual in that commentary in a different hand sits between the formal lines of scripture. Devotional marking in red run throughout the formal scripture. The scripture is in 'Nashki', made popular around this time because it was more easily read and written. The aya are decorative floral roundels in gold, with clear petals, a central blue for with 8 evenly spaced radiating linears from the centre to the circumference. The 5 and 10 verse marginals have the same circular centre containing a central symbol, with the 10th having a more elaborate surround and a clear red verse marker by its side. This is a rare quality manuscript. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing. Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional delivery fee charged by us.
